LITTLE ISLAND CREAMERY WAS THE BRAINCHILD OF LOCAL PUGET ISLANDERS DICK MCDONALD AND CHEESEMAKER KYLEEN AUSTIN. A WASHINGTON NATIVE, DICK WAS AN ECONOMIST IN WASHINGTON, D.C. AND CHICAGO BEFORE RETIRING TO THE LIFE IN THE COUNTRY.

DICK HAS BEEN MEMBER OF THE ISLAND COMMUNITY SINCE 1994 WHEN HE AND HIS SISTER AND HER HUSBAND BOUGHT ADJOINING PROPERTIES ON LITTLE ISLAND. OVER THE YEARS DICK ACQUIRED THE 34-ACRE FARM ACROSS THE HIGHWAY. IN 2014 DICK ASKED KYLEEN TO HELP HIM RESTORE THE BARN AND BRING IT BACK TO LIFE AS A LICENSED DAIRY OPERATION.

KYLEEN, HAS BEEN A CHEESE MAKER FOR 15 YEARS, DURING WHICH SHE HAS DESIGNED AND STARTED TWO OTHER LICENSED DAIRIES. DICK’S SISTER, KATHLEEN, AGREED TO JOIN DICK AND KYLEEN IN THE BUSINESS. ALTHOUGH SHE LIVES WITH HER FAMILY IN PORTLAND, SHE LOVES HAVING ROOTS IN WASHINGTON AGAIN, AND IS DEDICATED TO THE CREAMERY AND THE FAMILY BUSINESS.

We adopted most of our cheese making techniques from the French, aging caves and all.
